The Drexel golf team braved cold and blustery conditions on its way to the Swarthmore Invitational title. The Dragons shot a 310 in the one-day event held at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa. It was Drexel's first tournament victory of the spring season.
Senior Joe April (Sewell, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) and sophomore Myles Vlachos (Monrovia, Md./Urbina) tied with a Penn golfer for the top individual score. All three players fired a one-over-par 72 on the day. It was the best scoring day of the season for April and it was Vlachos' best round of the spring.
Freshman Frank Petrash (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) shot a five-over-par 76 to place fifth overall. Junior Steve Ransom (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May) and sophomore Sean Semenetz (Tyler Hill, Pa./Sullivan West (N.Y.) each shot a 77.
The temperature only reached 45 degrees in Springfield, and the wind was a major factor on the course.
The Dragons played in their final tune-up before heading to the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. This year's championship will be held in Homestead, Va. and will begin on April 20.
Final team standings:
1. Drexel (310)
2. Penn (314)
3. Swarthmore (333)
4. Neumann (335)
5. Dickinson (361)
